August 8, 1988 (referred to as “8888”) is an important symbolic date in Burma’s ongoing democracy movement. The date symbolizes the will of the Burmese people to embrace democracy and reject the military dictatorship that ruled Burma for decades.
On August 8, 1988, Burma’s military regime began large-scale assaults to regain control of the country. Thousands of innocent Burmese were arrested, imprisoned and murdered during these assaults.
Twenty years after 8888, the people of Burma continue to use all available means to remove Burma's military regime and build a democratic nation.
We cordially invite you to join us as we honor all of those who have endeavored and sacrificed to bring democracy, freedom, and human rights to Burma. We will be holding a ceremony and protests in New York City at the below-listed date(s) and time(s).
