BIOGRAPHY OF DAW AUNG SAN SUU KYI

Aung San Suu Kyi is the daughter of Burmese Independence hero, General Aung San and Daw Khin Kyi. She was born on June 19, 1945 in Rangoon, Burma and is the youngest of three siblings. Her eldest brother Aung San Oo lives in the United States with his family and her second eldest brother Aung San Lin passed away at an early age. When Aung San Suu Kyi was just two years old, her father, General Aung San was assassinated.

Aung San Suu Kyi attended St. Francis Convent from 1949-1957 and she later attended Methodist School until 1960.

In 1960, Daw Khin Kyi was appointed Burma’s ambassador to India. Aung San Suu Kyi accompanied her mother to India and there, she studied Political Science at New Delhi University.

From 1964-1967, Aung San Suu Kyi was at St. Hugh’s college, Oxford University and earned her BA in philosophy, politics and economics from that school.

In 1968, Aung San Suu Kyi was an assistant researcher at the Political Science Department (Asia and Africa Studies) of London University.

From 1969-1971, she served as an assistant Secretary for Advisory Committee on Administrative and Budgetary Questions, United Nations, Secretariat.

In January 1972, Aung San Suu Kyi got married to Dr. Michael Aris, a British Scholar and she has two sons.

From 1972-1973, she served as a research officer at Royal Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Bhutan.

From 1985-1986, she was a visiting scholar at Center of Southeast Asian Studies, Kyoto University, researching on South East Asia and particularly on her father.

In 1987, Aung San Suu Kyi had a fellowship at Indian Institute and after that, she returned to Oxford where she enrolled at London School of Oriental and African Studies to work on advanced degree.

Aung San Suu Kyi returned to Burma in March 1988 to care for her ailing mother. Her return coincided with the Rangoon university students protesting against the one party system of Ne Win’s socialist government.

August 8, 1988 marked the mass uprising throughout Burma. Military violently suppressed the peaceful protestors and thousands were killed.

On 24 August, 1988, Aung San Suu Kyi made her public appearance at the demonstration site in front of the Rangoon General Hospital.

On August 26, 1988, Aung San Suu Kyi organized a rally at the famous Shwe Dagon Pagoda and more than five million people attended the event demanding for formation of a democratic government.

The authorities orchestrated a military coup on September 18, 1988 and violently suppressed the democracy movement. Thousands of lives were killed and ruined again.

On September 24, 1988 the National League for Democracy was formed and Aung San Suu Gyi a general-secretary. Aung San Suu Kyi’s mother passed away on December 27, 1988.

While campaigning for the National League for Democracy, Aung San Suu Kyi was placed under house arrest for the first time in 1989. During her incarceration, she was awarded the 1991 noble peace prize.

Aung San Suu Kyi was released from the house arrest in July 1995 and she continued with her campaign for the National League for Democracy. Aung San Suu Kyi’s husband, Michael Aris died from a prostrate cancer in 1999 after being denied to see his wife.

Aung San Suu Kyi was second time rearrested and placed under house arrest in September 2000 for fourteen days. She was released and then placed under house arrest again for the third time from September 22, 2000 to May 6, 2002.

Aung San Suu Kyi’s husband died in 1999 after many failed attempt to see his wife before his death.

From September 22, 2000 to May 6, 2002, Aung San Suu Kyi was placed under house arrest again for the third time.

On May 30, 2003 while touring in Sittaing Division, near Depayin Town, Aung San Suu Kyi and her entourage were attacked by the government backed mobs. She escaped narrowly from death but arrested at the entrance of Ye Oo Town. From June 20, 2003 to June 24, 2003, she was detained in infamous Insein prison. Later she was moved to Ye Mon Tat Sakan. While she was Ye Mon Tat Sakan, she was admitted to the hospital to receive operation on September 16, 2003.

When she was released from the hospital on September 26, 2003, she was put under house arrest for the fourth time until to this date. Aung San Suu Kyi is the recipient of more than 80 awards including Noble Peace Prize.
